Gavin's 6th Birthday
First I'd like to thank everyone for the cards and gifts, if it wasn't for that his birthday would have been a completely rotten day. Poor Boy! With Ben losing his job a couple weeks ago, we really didn't have the means to through him a big party this year. he seemed ok with that because we had planned on still baking a cake together and singing "Happy Birthday". My mom was coming over as well and adding in the cards and packages he received in the mail, things weren't looking to bad for him. Well some days nothing seems to work like it should.
I had dropped off cupcakes for him at the school earlier in the day so he could celebrate with his class. He wanted me to stay and read to the class, which was on the list of things he could pick to help celebrate being the "star of the week". But, unfortunately, I had no one to sit with the baby. So, I wasn't able and he was disappointed. When he got home from school I allowed him to open one of the small gifts we got for him just to hold him over til my mom and Ben got there. He was happy enough with that for a while.
Now weather here had been nice for days but, of course, it had to get nasty on a day we had plans. The snow really started falling around 4:00 so when I picked Caraline up from tutoring at 5:00, the roads were already getting bad. Ben wasn't suppose to be getting done from work until 6:00 so I already knew he was gonna be a while getting home. Gavin was starting to get really antsy so I decided to start cooking dinner and baking the cake. He was happy helping me with that for a while but I knew it wasn't gonna last to long. My mom called a little after 6 to let me know she was stuck in traffic thanks to the snow and Ben hadn't even called to tell me he had left work yet. I knew then it was gonna be a bad night. By 7:00 Gavin was really upset, thinking everyone had forgotten about him. It was time to decorate the cake but he really wasn't in the mood by then. After a little pushing, I got him into it and that held him off for another half hour or so.
Well things just weren't ment to be! My mom called around 8 to tell me the roads were to bad and that there wasn't any way she was making it to our house. She tried explaining to Gavin, but he wasn't hearing anything but "no one came for his birthday". Ben still wasn't even on his way home and I wanted too just cry for my little boy. I decided there was no way we could wait any longer, so me and the kids sang "happy birthday" and opened his presents.
Ben finally got home a couple minutes before 9:00. He had just enough time to say happy birthday and good night! I allowed gavin to watch a movie on his new dvd player while he fell asleep, It was the least I could do concidering his night.
My mom came over the following day but it wasn't the same for him. Poor boy has been walking around ever since telling every one he had the crappiest birthday EVER.
